Resting and sleeping well after a breast fat transfer can help your body heal, support the fat transfer process, support your comfort and lower post-surgery risks. While it can be intuitive to want to rest after a cosmetic procedure, resting and sleeping can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable and difficult to navigate.
In this blog, we’ll go over our five top tips to help you sleep and rest comfortably and effectively after your breast fat transfer procedure.
Why is rest so important after a breast fat transfer?
While a breast fat transfer doesn’t involve placing breast implants and can be a less extensive approach, it’s still a surgical procedure that will require healing afterwards.
The procedure, also sometimes referred to as a natural breast augmentation, involves harvesting fat from one part of the body, purifying it, and then transferring it to the breasts. While breast implants can create a significantly noticeable change, using the fat transfer method instead can offer more subtle to moderate results.
Particularly during the first few weeks after the procedure, your body will be working to heal, adapt, and integrate the transferred fat cells into their new location. The goal is to help as many of those cells survive as possible, as some degree of fat absorption by the body is normal.
So, not only will getting enough rest and sleep help to manage normal discomfort after surgery (such as swelling and tenderness), but it will also support your body as it heals and can even improve the chances of the transferred fat cells surviving.
Tip 1: Adjust your activity levels
Getting enough sleep and rest will often require making some adjustments to your daily routine.
After most surgical cosmetic procedures, you may need to schedule some time off work to allow you to rest sufficiently at home. While you’re at home, aiming to maintain a consistent sleep schedule can help. We recommend trying to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
Throughout the day, while resting should be a priority, taking short and gentle walks around the house can help your healing process. You’ll need to avoid overly physically demanding activities, like workouts and heavy lifting, but light movement can help to boost your body’s circulation and reduce swelling. Light walks can also help you sleep better at night.
When you see Dr Rastogi for a consultation in Sydney, he will specify the instructions you’ll need to follow when it comes to adjusting your activity levels. You can typically expect to slowly increase your activity levels as your body heals, following Dr Rastogi’s advice.
Tip 2: Manage your sleep environment
Our bodies naturally need a good environment for proper sleep. Making sure your room isn’t too warm, dark enough, and nice and quiet will help. If you’d like to make some changes to your room, like installing blackout curtains, this can help you get better sleep in the longer term – not just during your recovery!
Following a calming bedtime routine before you go to sleep can also help your body relax and wind down for the evening. We recommend ditching screens, such as TVs and smartphones, at least an hour before bed. To help you wind down, you may like to read, meditate, or listen to relaxing music instead.
Tip 3: Aim to sleep and rest on your back
This next tip is trickier, as it can feel uncomfortable at first if you’re not used to sleeping on your back. However, if you can adapt, sleeping and resting on your back instead of on your sides or stomach can significantly improve your recovery after a breast fat transfer surgery.
Back-sleeping keeps pressure off the chest area, giving the fat grafts a better environment to settle and establish a blood supply. It can also help swelling subside and prevent putting tension on your incision sites.
If you’re not usually a back-sleeper, you can aim to sleep and rest on your back by placing extra pillows beneath your head to create a semi-reclined position. You could also try using a wedge pillow, which can help prevent you from turning throughout the night.
Tip 4: Manage any discomfort throughout the night
It’s normal to experience some discomfort while sleeping in a new position or due to the post-procedure healing process, as mild pain or swelling can make it harder to fall or stay asleep.
To manage pain, Dr Rastogi may recommend taking pain relief medication, or may prescribe medication. To effectively stay on top of your comfort levels and help you stay comfortable throughout the night, it’s highly important to take your medication as directed.
Using ice packs on the areas where fat was harvested can also ease discomfort, but you’ll need to avoid applying ice directly to the breasts. Cold compresses are not suitable for the newly transferred fat cells, as exposure to the cold can influence their survival.
