Breast Implants Sydney (Breast Augmentation Mammoplasty)

Dr Rastogi really enjoys performing breast augmentation mammoplastys (breast implants), which is why he has performed them for over 28 years!

It is incredibly heartening that we have patients come back to us from all the way back in 1996, because of the relationship Dr Rastogi and the clinic have built with them.

Breast implants are used for patients who want to change their breast size and alter the shape of their breasts. The reason why can vary from patient to patient. For this reason, Dr Rastogi will create a personalised surgical plan for you.

Outcomes

There are many reasons why a patient would seek out breast implants. A few reasons may involve breasts that have not fully developed or patients who have tuberous breasts.

What outcomes you may expect after the surgery:

  • Increase in volume to the breasts
  • Increase in size to the breasts
  • Correction in breast asymmetry
  • Customised aesthetic for you
  • Increase in volume and size on patients who have little to no breast tissue

Breast Augmentation (Mammoplasty) Before and After

The outcomes shown are only relevant for this patient and do not necessarily reflect the results other patients may experience, as results may vary due to many factors including the individual’s genetics, diet and exercise. Photos are taken 3 months post-op. All surgery contains risks; Read more here.

We will go through the procedure in depth, discuss preparation, recovery, quote breakdown, risks and complications and surgical dates if you wish to have this information.

You will leave the consultation with a copy of all your notes and information so you can take your time making an informed decision.

The consultation fee covers your two consultations with Dr Rastogi and any additional consultations required to ensure all your questions are answered.

Suitable candidates

Dr Rastogi will assess your health and discuss your expectations for surgery to determine if you are a suitable candidate. This is normally done during your first video consultation.

Suitable candidates should have good overall health and realistic expectations about what breast augmentation can achieve. Candidates should be at or near their ideal body weight, as significant weight fluctuations can affect the long-term results of the surgery. Candidates should also be of suitable emotional well-being. As of 1st of July 2023, patients in Australia and New Zealand are required to have a psychological evaluation to ensure they are mentally fit for surgery.

Ideal candidates should also be non-smokers or willing to quit smoking for a set period before and after surgery, as smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

Candidates who plan to have children should discuss this during the consultation. While breast augmentation should not necessarily interfere with pregnancy or breastfeeding, it’s essential to consider potential implications and discuss how the procedure may affect these plans.

Preparing for your procedure

During your in rooms consultation with Dr Rastogi you will go through how to best prepare you for the procedure and recovery. When minimising risks during breast augmentation surgery preparation, lifestyle changes can make a critical difference. Below we have highlighted some of the preparation that we will go over during your consultation.

Smoking is a significant concern, impeding proper circulation and wound healing. To reduce these risks, quitting smoking before your surgery is highly advisable. Quitting smoking may improve blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues and reduce the likelihood of post-operative complications such as infections and delayed wound healing. Patients who continue to smoke are at a higher risk of experiencing issues like skin necrosis, where the skin tissue does not receive adequate blood supply, potentially leading to thicker and darker scarring and implant-related problems.

Managing medications can also be crucial. Some medications, including blood thinners can increase bleeding risks during surgery. Dr Rastogi will provide guidelines on which medications to discontinue or adjust in the weeks leading up to your procedure and how to manage this effectively. Vitamins, alcohol, and certain pain relief medications such as aspirin, and Nurofen will need to be stopped due to its blood thinning properties. As noted above, including blood thinners can increase bleeding risks during surgery.

Dr Rastogi will also request you to wash in any antibacterial body wash 5 days prior to surgery. This is to  slow down and/or stop the growth of germs growing which may decrease any chance of infection during  your procedure, along with additional precautions Dr Rastogi has in place during the surgery.

Breast augmentation options

A procedure with breast implants provides various options, including different sizes, shapes, textures and placement options. During a consultation, you will discuss your options to design a suitable procedure plan that suits your personal goals.

Breast implant sizes

The range of implant sizes allows for a broad spectrum of results, from subtle to more pronounced changes in breast volume. The choice of size is highly individual and should be guided by your preferences and body proportions. Breast implant sizes are typically measured in cubic centimetres (cc). The volume of the implant, represented in these units, indicates the amount of saline or silicone gel inside the implant shell.

Breast implant shapes

Breast implants come in two primary shapes: round and teardrop. Round implants provide fullness in both the upper and lower portions of the breast. In contrast, teardrop or anatomical implants aim to mimic the breast’s natural shape, with more volume at the base and a tapered appearance towards the top. The choice between these shapes will depend on the degree of projection you want to achieve.

YouTube video

Breast implant textures

Implants can have either a smooth or textured surface. Textured implants are designed to reduce the risk of implant movement or rotation and are often used in anatomical (teardrop) implants. Smooth implants may feel softer and affect the feel of the results. Dr Rastogi will recommend the most suitable texture based on the chosen implant shape and placement.

Breast implant placements

Implants can be placed in three primary locations – sub-muscular (under the chest muscle), sub-glandular (directly behind the breast tissue), or dual plane (above and underneath the chest muscle). The sub-muscular placement provides additional coverage and support, while sub-glandular placement can be suitable for individuals with sufficient breast tissue. The dual plane method works to combine elements of both sub-glandular and sub-muscular placements. The choice depends on personal factors, such as your existing breast anatomy.

Dr Rastogi will work with you to design a personalised procedure plan that carefully considers your personal preferences and individual anatomy. He can help you understand what to expect for the results depending on the selections.

The day of your breast augmentation procedure

Your breast augmentation will be performed in a hospital under general anaesthesia. Before your procedure, you will be given an overview of what to expect on the day of your surgery. Details can vary from patient to patient, so the information here should only be referred to as a guide.

The procedure is performed in the hospital. The hospitals are Waratah Private Hospital in Hurstville and Double Bay Day Hospital in Double Bay.

If you require an overnight stay, you may wish to choose having your surgery at Waratah Private Hospital, however there will be additional costs to stay overnight.

You will need someone to collect you after your surgery and stay with you overnight. If you do not have a support person, or you’re travelling by yourself, our lovely team can assist with options for you, so you are looked after following surgery,

When you have presented to the hospital, the admission team will be on the front desk and ask you to fill out paperwork. The hospital fee will be processed at this time.

Soon after, you will be escorted to the preparation area, where you will speak with our amazing anaesthetist, speak with Dr Rastogi and nursing staff to ensure you are comfortable and excited.

Generally, the procedure begins by making incisions. The incisions can be placed in different locations, such as under the breast crease, around the areola, or in the armpit. However, Dr Rastogi mainly places the incision in the inframammary fold, which is within the crease underneath the breast.

After the incisions are made, Dr Rastogi will create a pocket either under the chest muscle (submuscular), directly behind the breast tissue (sub-glandular), or a combination of both (dual plane). The choice of pocket location depends on the patient’s anatomy, lifestyle, and personal preferences. Dr Rastogi will then coat the breast implant in an antibiotic to decrease any chance of infection before carefully inserting the breast implant, which can be filled with saline or silicone gel and are available in various textures, sizes, profiles, and shapes. The implants’ position will be adjusted to achieve results proportionate to the patient’s body.

The incisions are then carefully closed, and you will be moved to a recovery area to be monitored. Dr Rastogi will then come and see you when you wake up from the general anaesthetic, in the recovery area and check in with you.

When you are ready to be discharged, the hospital will contact your support person to collect you.

The evening of your procedure, you may feel lightheaded from the general anaesthetic, which is why you need a support person when you get home. We ask that you sip on water to stay hydrated prior to going to bed. We highly recommend having a few pillows on both sides of you, and under your knees as you will be required to sleep on your back.

Recovery

After your breast augmentation, the recovery phase is crucial. Dr Rastogi will provide detailed instructions during your consultation regarding post-operative care requirements. You will also receive a comprehensive recovery timeline and contact information for Dr Rastogi and the nurses who will support you during the weeks following your surgery. Our dedicated team will always be on call if you require assistance after hours and ensure you are fully supported in the following weeks.

Your first post-operative appointment, the post-op one appointment, will be scheduled three to four days after the surgery, and this is done on a Monday morning. It will take place at our clinic, allowing Dr Rastogi and our nurses to assess your progress and address any concerns or questions you may have. Additional post-operative appointments will be booked on that day. These follow-up visits are essential for monitoring your recovery and ensuring everything is progressing as expected.

Most patients are happy to go back to office jobs after their post op appointment, bearing in mind each patient heals differently. However, working on a laptop the week after surgery is ok. More labour intensive jobs will require at least one week off work, however, our team can guide you before booking in a surgery date how long you may expect to be off work.

During the initial days following surgery, we want you to commence light walking to keep the blood flowing through your body and minimise the risk of developing blood clots. This is also good for the psyche, and can speed up recovery.

You may experience discomfort, swelling and bruising, however this is all managed with prescribed pain medications.

While you may gradually resume some activities during the first two weeks following the surgery, please remember that a full recovery from this procedure typically takes approximately six weeks. Following the recovery timeline and guidelines provided by Dr Rastogi is essential to optimise your healing process.

It’s crucial to wear a supportive surgical bra or compression garment, as recommended by Dr Rastogi, to minimise swelling. Maintaining a balanced diet and staying well-hydrated will also support your body’s healing process. You will be advised on wound care and incision management to prevent infection and scarring and minimise scarring. You may be recommended scar management cream to use throughout your recovery.

You will receive personalised instructions on when and how to shower after your procedure and how to slowly resume physical activity. If you experience any concerning symptoms during your recovery that could indicate a complication, such as infection, please get in touch with the clinic as soon as possible.

Results

Breast augmentation results can largely vary from patient to patient, depending on personal factors such as the type of implants chosen.

The results of a breast augmentation procedure become more apparent as the initial swelling and bruising subside. Straight after your surgery, you can notice an increase in breast size. They may appear firmer and more elevated than the outcome due to post-operative swelling. Over time, the breasts will slightly settle from their initial position, and the scars from the incisions should gradually fade. Scar results vary from patient to patient, and will depend on your skin type, pigmentation and if scar care products are used in line with your recovery guide. Scar care products may include a silicone gel or tape that can be used post-operatively or further to this, treatments provided by Dr Rastogi’s clinic, can be also added into your scar care routine that may reduce the size of the scar by breaking down the bonds between the collagen fibres, reducing the scar tissue beneath the skin.

It’s important to understand that implant maintenance and regular check-ups are recommended. Although breast implants are designed to provide long lasting results, and additionally designed to last 10-20 years, regular check ups are highly advised. At 5 years, 7 years, 10 years and every 2 years following, an ultrasound checking the integrity of the breast implants is important to say on top of the health of the breast implant.

During your consultation, Dr Rastogi will discuss what you can expect from your results.

Risks and complications

It is important to note that medical, cosmetic, or non-surgical procedures are not risk-free.

If you plan to have your surgery, you should discuss two key factors during your consultation:

  1. Preparing for your surgery and how you can try to decrease your risks.
  2. Preparing for your recovery and how that affects your results and risks.

Dr Rastogi will go through all risks thoroughly with you during your consultation in Sydney or Double Bay. He will also explain how to minimise your risks during the preparation and recovery stages and provide personalised instructions that will help.

Pre-operative measures like quitting smoking and adjusting medications can help to minimise risks. During recovery, ensuring enough rest by avoiding strenuous activities and slowly resuming exercise as recommended will help. Maintaining a balanced diet can also support healing and minimise the risk of complications. Regular follow-up appointments will help to monitor your healing progress and address any potential issues promptly.

The potential risks associated with breast augmentation include:

  • Breast asymmetry
  • Infection
  • Swelling, bruising, and bleeding
  • Irregular skin surface

If you have any questions about the associated risks, please get in touch with our team to learn more.

Frequently asked questions

Can breast augmentation correct sagging breasts, or do I need a breast lift?

Although a Breast Augmentation with implants is designed to add volume and not address skin laxity, you may be able to achieve the aesthetic of a breast lift with a tailored surgical plan that may involve using a scaffolding prosthesis. If you are not sure if you are suitable for a breast lift (mastopexy) or breast implants (breast augmentation mammoplasty) you can sent through images to reception@rastogi.com.au and we can get Dr Rastogi to assess these images prior to you booking in.

The reason why most patients may not want a breast lift is due to costs (longer procedure) and scars are on the front of the breast, rather than hidden in the inframammary fold in a breast implant procedure.

Can I combine a breast augmentation with a breast lift?

You may be able to combine these two procedures as they address different aspects of the breasts. The ability to combine procedures will ultimately depend on personal factors that will need to be assessed during your consultation.

This may be done in one stage or two stages. This is determined when you have your in room consultation with Dr Rastogi.

What is capsular contracture, and how can it be prevented or treated?

Capsular contracture is a complication where scar tissue tightens around the implant. Prevention methods may include massage and medications. However, should the complication occur, you may require medication or revision surgery depending on the stage you are at with your capsular contracture.

You may have a capsular contracture if one breast feels tight, and there is a dull pain. If this is the case, it is always best to let our team know as soon as possible with images, so we can determine a treatment plan for you.

Can I choose the placement of my breast implants?

You can discuss implant placement preferences, such as sub-glandular sub-muscular, or dual plane. You will also be able to choose your implants’ size, shape and texture.

How much does breast augmentation cost?

The cost reflects Dr Rastogi’s 20+ years performing the procedure, and does include his surgical fee, hospital fee anaesthetic fee and a lifetime of post operative care. We accept all major credit cards, and payment plans are available. To discuss the costings, and payment methods, please call, email, or text our friendly team. Will breast augmentation surgery leave visible scars?

Scarring is usually minimal and strategically placed but can vary based on incision location and individual healing. You will receive personalised advice on scar management.

Can I have breast augmentation if I'm planning to lose weight?

It’s generally advisable to reach and maintain your weight before considering breast augmentation to achieve the most stable results.

How can I prepare my body for a sufficient breast augmentation recovery?

Preparation includes quitting smoking, adjusting medications, and maintaining a healthy diet before surgery. You will need to follow your pre-operative instructions closely as they will be personalised according to the details of your procedure and your personal needs.

Is it possible to remove breast implants if I change my mind?

Breast implants can be removed in a separate surgery referred to as implant removal. If you have private health insurance, this may help with Hospital fees associated with implant removal surgery.

Is breast augmentation a one-time procedure, or will I need revisions?

While breast augmentation can be a one-time procedure, some patients may need revision surgeries for various reasons, such as changing implant size or addressing complications.
