Does A Facelift Change Your Smile?

|

A facelift is a procedure that primarily focuses on repositioning and tightening certain facial tissues, without making unwanted changes to your natural appearance.

However, some patients notice that their smile feels a little different in the early stages of recovery, due to normal and temporary post-surgical symptoms like swelling.

In this blog, we’ll go through how a facelift can influence your smile, why any changes are usually temporary, and what you can expect as you recover.

How can a facelift temporarily affect your smile?

During a facelift, your doctor will work with layers of tissue beneath the skin, which can include the muscles that contribute to facial expression. These muscles are connected to other structures in the face, so changes in one area can temporarily influence movement in another.

It’s not uncommon for swelling to affect the lower face and mouth area in the days and weeks after the procedure. This swelling, combined with the healing of deeper tissues, can make the mouth feel a little tight or restricted. In most cases, these sensations improve steadily as the tissues recover.

The facial nerve network can also be temporarily affected. These nerves branch out across the face to control movement in different areas, including the muscles that allow you to smile. While care is taken to avoid nerve injury, the tissues around them can still be affected by the surgery, which might make certain expressions feel slightly different during early healing.

Can a facelift permanently change your smile?

The goal of a facelift is to address tissue laxity in a way that aligns with your individual features. Contrary to common misconceptions, the aim isn’t to entirely change your appearance.

Therefore, it’s not a procedure that would necessarily change the way you smile. However, it all depends on the results you want to achieve.

What changes can you notice straight after surgery?

Straight after a facelift, swelling and stiffness are usually the main reasons for any temporary changes in your smile. You might feel as though one side of your smile moves differently to the other, or that it takes more effort to move your mouth in a certain way.

Some patients also notice mild numbness around the cheeks or mouth. This is typically linked to the small sensory nerves in the skin and underlying tissue. While this numbness can make your smile feel unusual, it tends to improve gradually over several weeks or months.

As swelling reduces and the tissues become more mobile again, your facial movements should start to feel more natural. Swelling is a normal part of recovery, and in the case of facelift surgery, it can extend into the cheeks, lips, and even the chin.

Tightness can also come from the way the deeper layers of tissue are repositioned during surgery. These layers need time to adapt and relax as healing progresses. While this process can make facial movements feel different at first, the body gradually adjusts.

Additionally, the facial nerves are responsible for controlling the small muscles that create different expressions. These nerves travel close to the surgical areas during a facelift, so they can sometimes be temporarily affected by the procedure.

In most cases, any nerve-related changes are temporary and improve as the nerves recover from the surgery. This can take weeks or sometimes a few months, depending on the individual. True permanent nerve injury is rare, but your doctor will discuss the risks and how they apply to your particular situation before surgery is performed.

When does facial movement start to return to normal?

For many patients, movement around the mouth starts to feel more comfortable within the first few weeks, with gradual improvement continuing over the following months. The exact timeframe will depend on the extent of your surgery, your body’s healing rate, and whether any deeper tissues were repositioned close to the muscles that control your smile.

During this time, it’s important that you follow your doctor’s post-operative guidance. This can include avoiding excessive stretching of the mouth, keeping swelling to a minimum with cold compresses in the early stages, and maintaining good overall health to support recovery.

As mobility improves, you might still feel some tightness during larger facial expressions, like wide smiles or laughter. This usually fades as tissues regain flexibility.

What can you do to support your recovery process?

You can support the recovery of your smile by following your doctor’s recommendations closely and giving your tissues time to heal without strain. This may mean avoiding certain mouth movements, such as opening too wide or chewing very firm foods in the first couple of weeks.

Gentle facial movements are generally fine and can help prevent stiffness, but these should always be done within your comfort zone. Maintaining good hydration, eating a balanced diet, and keeping swelling under control can also help with overall healing.

If your doctor advises any gentle facial exercises later in the recovery process, these can be useful in restoring movement and reducing any lingering tightness.

When should you check in with your doctor?

While it’s normal for your smile to feel slightly different after a facelift, there are times when it’s worth checking in with your doctor.

If you notice sudden changes in movement, persistent asymmetry beyond the expected healing period, or any unusual sensations that concern you, it’s a good idea to have them reviewed.

Follow-up appointments are an important part of the process, as they allow your doctor to track your progress, address any concerns, and let you know when you can expect further improvement.
