Am I The Right Candidate for a Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

|

Many men and women desire to remove excess skin on the face and neck with a facelift rhytidectomy procedure. The right candidate will have enough excess skin (or skin laxity) on the face to remove surgically, but this is not the only factor that makes someone a suitable candidate.

Understanding whether you’re a suitable candidate involves considering a variety of factors, such as your health, expectations, and lifestyle. There are health contraindications and personal factors that may make you an unsuitable candidate for a facelift (rhytidectomy).

In this blog, we’ll go over the factors that will need to be discussed before planning your facelift (rhytidectomy) procedure. To determine if you are a suitable candidate, you’ll need to have an in-person consultation with Dr Rastogi.

If you’re ready to book your consultation, Dr Rastogi is an experienced surgeon, located in Double Bay, Sydney. You are welcome to contact our team to book your consultation for a rhytidectomy and discuss your suitability for the procedure.

Good general health

As with any surgery, suitable candidates will need to be in good overall health. The main reason that your health will need to be considered is to prevent complications from occurring.

Certain underlying or uncontrolled medical conditions, allergies, or skin conditions can interfere with the body’s healing process after surgery, which may mean that surgery is not the best option.

Some medical conditions can also increase the risks associated with surgery. These conditions typically include uncontrolled high blood pressure, diabetes, bleeding disorders, or autoimmune diseases.

When you meet with Dr Rastogi, you’ll need to disclose any health conditions or allergies you have. You should also mention any past surgeries you have had.

You’ll need to discuss some lifestyle factors that can influence your general health, such as drinking habits and if you are a smoker. Dr Rastogi may instruct you to avoid alcohol for a specific amount of time before and after surgery, and to quit smoking before undergoing your procedure. Smoking can impair healing and increase the risk of complications.

Age range

While there is no specific age requirement for a facelift (rhytidectomy), candidates are typically in their 40s to 60s.  Skin laxity can become more noticeable around this age, particularly on the face. Candidates within this age range may be more likely to have enough excess skin to remove surgically.

However, age alone doesn’t determine candidacy. More important than chronological age is the extent of facial ageing, and the patient’s overall health.

Some candidates may still be suitable candidates for a rhytidectomy at a younger age if they have significant skin laxity or fine lines and wrinkles. Factors other than age, such as genetics, smoking and other lifestyle factors, can increase skin laxity and other signs of ageing on the face.

Readiness to complete recovery

Another factor to consider is the recovery process and downtime associated with a facelift (rhytidectomy).

While advances in surgical techniques have reduced recovery times compared to older methods, patients should still be prepared for a period of swelling, bruising, and discomfort following any surgery.

Depending on the extent of the procedure, the initial recovery time can take up to a few weeks, while swelling will need a little longer to fully subside.

During recovery, patients will need to follow personalised instructions and limit certain activities. Time off work will be required, and activities such as strenuous exercise and heavy lifting will need to be avoided until the body has sufficiently healed. Following a healthy diet to remain in good health will also be important.

Essentially, suitable candidates will need to be ready to complete their recovery period, and able to take the required length of time off work to recover at home.

Realistic and suitable expectations

A facelift (rhytidectomy) candidate’s expectations for the procedure should be realistic, and suitable when it comes to what the procedure can achieve.

While a rhytidectomy can be extensive, it’s important to understand its limitations. It is not able to completely remove all signs of ageing (such as all fine lines and wrinkles). It is also not designed to change a patient’s fundamental appearance.

What it can do is remove excess skin, and lift facial tissue in a way that corresponds with your particular surgical plan. The surgery cannot, however, prevent the body’s ageing process from naturally altering the results in the future.

Before a facelift (rhytidectomy), candidates will always need to discuss their expectations with Dr Rastogi and ensure that they have a clear understanding of what the procedure can and cannot achieve.

Good skin elasticity

Your skin elasticity refers to your skin’s ability to maintain a level of tightness – that is, its ability to stretch and bounce back.

Good skin elasticity generally benefits facelift (rhytidectomy) patients. While candidates generally want to undergo the procedure due to skin laxity, having a certain level of elasticity in areas of the face may help. Candidates with overall poor skin elasticity may find it more difficult to get the results they want.

Factors that can influence skin elasticity include genetics, excessive sun exposure, and lifestyle habits such as smoking. The factors can increase skin laxity (or may cause skin laxity to show earlier in life).

It can be difficult to tell whether or not you have good skin elasticity, so we recommend leaving this to Dr Rastogi to assess during your consultation.

Other personal considerations

There are other factors, that are highly personal, that should be considered before undergoing any surgery.

Firstly, a facelift (rhytidectomy) can be a significant financial investment. Candidates should carefully consider their budget and ensure that they can cover the costs of the procedure. Costs will need to include surgeon’s fees, hospital fees, anaesthesia fees, and any other expenses such as medications. While cost shouldn’t be the sole determining factor as to whether or not you want to undergo surgery, it’s important to weigh the financial aspects of the procedure ahead of time.

A surgical procedure can also be a big personal journey. Before going through a procedure, you should give yourself time to consider if you are emotionally ready, prepared for your recovery, and have a good understanding of the results you want to achieve.

Your consultation will assess your suitability for surgery and provide you with information about the procedure. It will also help you decide if a facelift (rhytidectomy) is right for you. You can ask Dr Rastogi any questions and discuss any concerns. After your consultation, you will be able to decide if you are happy to undergo the procedure.
