However the most common reason that patients come to see Sydney Breast Implants Surgeon, Dr Rastogi, is to make their breasts a more beautiful shape, larger, fuller and more balanced with their figures. Some women are born with small or misshapen breasts. Many others find they have lost volume with age or that their breasts have become empty with breastfeeding. Still others simply feel that their breasts do not suit or balance their figure.

The breasts are the most important features giving shape, femininity and sensuality to a woman's figure and for many woman its lack or loss is felt very strongly. Breast enlargement surgery today is a very simple and straight forward way of creating the breast size and shape that a woman may want in order to fulfil her desires for her figure.

Q. When am I too old or too young for breast implants?

A. You are never too old for a breast augmentation. Woman of all ages wish to look beautiful and feel confident in the clothes they wear. However Breast enlargement surgery is an elective procedure and should only be performed for women with good health and low risk.

Many young women have breast augmentations however Sydney Breast Implants Surgeon, Dr Rastogi, also performs breast augmentation on women in their 40's, 50's and 60's. The average age overall is 35.

Being too young for a Breast Augmentation on the other hand is an issue. In order to make a decision to have breast implants you need the maturity and life experience to know that Breast Augmentation is right for you. You really need to know who you are before you change who you are. In general, you should be 18 years old at a minimum.

Q. What is Breast Augmentation exactly?

A. In simple terms, a breast augmentation (or in less elegant terms a boob job) is breast implant surgery. During this procedure breast implants (breast prosthesis) are placed in the breasts, behind all of the natural breast tissue, (pre muscular breast implants- see later) and often additionally behind the chest muscle as well (sub muscular breast implants - see later). They are inserted through a small skin incision, in order to make the breasts bigger, make the cleavage closer and create a more beautiful breast shape.

Q. Can I breast feed with breast implants?

A. Yes you can breast feed as normal after breast enlargement surgery. In a breast augmentation, breast implants whether they are premuscular breast implants (on top of the muscle) or submuscular breast implants (under the muscle) are always placed behind all of the natural breast tissue. In this way the natural breast tissue necessary for breast feeding is undisturbed and breast feeding can occur as normal.

It should be noted that some women without breast implants can find it difficult to breast feed, the same is true for those with implants and for the same reasons.

Q. Is Breast Augmentation painful?

A. No, not in Dr Rastogi's hands.

Q. Should my Breast Augmentation involve breast implants above or below the muscle, and what is a dual pocket?

A. Breast Augmentation surgery in which breast implants are placed over the muscle is called pre muscular implants (aka subglandular implants).

Breast Augmentation surgery in which the breast implants are placed under the chest muscle is called sub muscular breast implants (aka subpectoral breast implants).

In both cases it should be noted that all of the natural breast tissue is situated above the implant so that proper breast augmentation and breast screening (see later) can be performed.

Conventionally premuscular breast implants are utilised by women with more saggy breasts, because the muscle holds back the implant causing the overlying breast tissue to droop over the breast implants.

Submuscular implants are conventionally utilised by thinner women in order to hide the breast implants.

The main disadvantage of submuscular breast implants are that the breast can look harder and the cleavage is often pushed wider apart by the effect of the muscle. Active breasts which is excessive movement of the breast implants caused by the overlying muscle can also be an issue.

The main disadvantage of pre muscular breast implants are the greater chance of edge visibility and rippling.

Dr Anoop Rastogi specialises in the use of the more advanced polyurethane coated implants (aka P-ure implants or less elegantly furry Brazilians) see article the new breast implant revolution.

These implants can be placed in a dual pocket or dual plane.

The dual plane is a more sophisticated plane in which the upper half of the implant is placed under cover of the muscle to produce implant invisibility while the lower half of the implant lies clear of the muscle so that the breasts appear both softer and more natural.

Ordinary implants can be problematic in the plane however Polyurethane implants are ideally suited for the dual plane because they are much more stable in the tissues than ordinary implants so that a close natural cleavage can be produced and active breasts and rippling prevented.

Dr Rastogi will assess you carefully and discuss all this with you at your consultation.

Q. What are the complications of a Breast Augmentation?

A. Breast augmentation surgery is a safe and straight forward procedure.

As with all surgical procedures complications can occur from time to time. Dr Rastogi and his team will discuss these thoroughly during your consultation. Dr Rastogi's safe hands and his use of the more advanced polyurethane coated implants greatly reduces the risks of breast augmentation surgery.

Q. Can I still check for breast cancers following a Breast Augmentation?

A. Yes as was mentioned above, for breastfeeding. All of the natural breast tissue lies above the breast implants, (for both pre muscular breast augmentations and submuscular breast implants).

Therefore lumps can still be felt easily with your fingers. Ultrasound, mammogram and HRI screening are all possible.
