Breast Enlargement, 6. A Guide To Breast Enlargement. The process of breast augmentation involves many steps, each having an impact on the final outcome.

The Decision
The first step in a breast augmentation procedure is for the patient to decide what they want. This includes the size they want their breasts to be ,what shape they would ideally like their breasts to be, what they are hoping to achieve with a breast augmentation and why they are considering a breast augmentation. The patient must be clear what she is after says Sydney cosmetic surgeon Dr Anoop Rastogi.

The Research
To do this it is vital the prospective patient researches her procedure thoroughly. A patient must understand a breast augmentation is an operation. It can produce beautiful results but it also has potential complications and risks. By being informed the patient can know if she is making a wise decision, explains Dr Rastogi, adding : I t san important decision,it should not be a whim. A good place to start research is on the Internet. Read up on all the procedures and get as much information as possible. Read worth while articles in magazines. Potential patients should educate them selves about what is out there. Th e re is a wide choice of implants, procedures and a vast choice of surgeons .
The Surgeon
One of the most important choices a patient will make ,other than the decision to have surgery, is choosing a surgeon. Who the patient chooses as her surgeon is an important decision because breast augmentation is also an artistic procedure - it is very surgeon dependent, says Dr Rastogi. Reputation can often lead to choosing a surgeon. It s a good idea for potential patients to see at least three surgeons. Listen to the surgeon during the consultation and most importantly see before and after photographs. These show realistic surgical results , says Dr Rastogi. If the surgeon doesn

Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons and seek someone who is specifically registered with them to do breast augmentation. It is important to choose a surgeon who listens to the desire of the patient. If the patient has realistic expectations the surgeon should understand and satisfy these .If the patient is unrealistic then the surgeon needs to discuss and educate the patient and allow the patient to readjust their expectations. Don't choose a surgeon who always does the sam e procedure,or always uses the sam e type of implant. Every patient has different breasts and to get the best results the procedure should be individually tailored. Once the surgeon is chosen,it is im portant to have faith in what they say ,though naturally ask questions . As Dr Rastogi says: A patient should choose a surgeon because she trusts them .

The Style
The next decision to be made is the details of the procedure. What size of implant to have. What type of implant to have .W here to have the incisions. Do the implants go behind the muscle or in front of the muscle? These decisions need to be made in conjunction with the experience of the surgeon, but it s good for the patient to have an understanding of the implications of each of the options, says Dr Rastogi. Where to have Surgery The patient can choose to be operated on in an accredited private hospital with a specialist anaesthetist present . Surgery can also be perform edina public hospital orin the doctors clinic in an accredited day surgery. The Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery recommends that all significant surgery be done in the presence of an anaesthetist, says Dr Rastogi. As breast augmentation is a significant surgical procedure it is worth while ensuring this is the case.

Recovery
It is important for the patient to understand the surgeons philosophy on scarring. Its not just about how beautiful the breasts look, its also how good the scar is, explains Dr Rastogi. It doesnt necessarily matter where the scar is, because a good scar should not be obvious anywhere. The importance is the quality of the scar and this is dependent on two things:the skill of the surgeon in closing the incision and the ability of the patient to heal . It is good to have done research on the recovery process to know what to expect. Recovery times difer from surgeon to surgeon, explains Dr Rastogi. If a surgeon operates gently,if they dont create a lot of trauma when they are doing the surgery ,the resulting discomfort is less. This can mean that the post-operative discomfort is shorter and the time off work is shorter. Recovery time also varies from patient to patient. The patient should also expect the surgeon will look after them post-operatively. They need to know that if they are in the unfortunate circumstance of being one of the less than 5% of patients who suffers a com plication from a breast augmentation, the surgeon will be there to support them . The breast augmentation procedure has m any stages and by being informed at each stage the patient will be more in control of their health and their result. A good guide ,but not an exclusive guide ,is to contact the Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery or the
